Making time for important things

What’s important?

Oftentimes, Our attention and efforts are focused on things that are urgent rather than important. We tend to solve for the short term and deprioritize the long term.

If we take a hard look at the world around us, in these exceptionally odd times(although, this feels like the new normal now), there seem to be five dimensions to every person’s wellbeing:

  • Mental and physical health
  • Family
  • Social connection and belonging
  • Career development and fulfillment
  • Spiritual awareness and growth

But when you think about it, we overlook these things the most.

Making time

When there are too many things to do, the mind is too busy to take a step back and see what is, in fact, important. The mind is constantly thinking of solutions to tasks but is also scattered and ineffective. What follows is a list of things I’ve personally used to try and unclutter the mind along with helping gain perspective.

  • Block Time to make time. Use a calendar instead of a to-do list.
  • Make a note of things that you think you will remember. The brain can’t be trusted to remember things, both big and small.
  • Small wins are key. If a task takes less than five mins, do it right away. It feels good when striking things off of the to-do list.
  • Create something you love. Perpetual passive consumption is demotivating and unproductive.
  • Practice taking a mindful moment, inhale deeply and observe your surroundings. Just be present and take in the world around you.
  • Know that there is nothing more important or urgent than your physical and mental health, your quality of life, and your family and friends.
